About Marcus

My name is Marcus Gabriel, and soccer has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing at a young age with Genesis FC, which is my dad’s club, and growing up around the game helped me build a strong technical and mental foundation. From early on, I learned discipline, consistency, and how to take soccer seriously.

At 13, I joined VSA Rush, where I began competing at a higher level. During this time, I helped my team win the State Cup, including the final against Sporting Iowa, and qualify for Nationals in Denver, Colorado. Competing on a national stage taught me how to prepare, handle pressure, and perform in high-level environments.

At 14, I traveled to Spain and joined Real Valladolid, later earning trial opportunities with Levante and Real Oviedo. Training in Spain exposed me to a faster, more tactical style of play that emphasized decision-making, positioning, and technical quality. During this time, I expanded my role from primarily a winger to also playing right back and wingback, which made me a more versatile and complete player.

At 15, I returned to Spain and spent time in Alicante, training and competing with Intercity FC and El Campello. I lived away from home with teammates, shared housing, and balanced soccer with online and in-person schooling. This experience closely mirrored the college-athlete lifestyle and helped me learn time management, accountability, and independence. Competing against older players in a demanding environment pushed me to improve my physicality, defensive awareness, and consistency.

At 16, I returned to Iowa and rejoined VSA Rush ECNL, bringing back the habits and mentality I developed overseas. I now approach soccer and academics with greater focus and professionalism and feel prepared for the demands of college soccer.

I currently play as a winger, wingback, and fullback, and I pride myself on my speed, intensity, and ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball. My goal is to play college soccer at the highest level possible while earning a strong degree and continuing to grow as a player and person.
