About Me

My name is Penny. I’m a libero from Rufus King IB High School in Milwaukee and playing for 1st Alliance for club season. I really love the game and would love to find a college where I can keep playing, find a fit academically, and connect with a good team and community. My gameplay style is scrappy. I never give up on a ball. I hustle and do whatever it takes to keep the play going. I am able to read the ball and react fast. I stay positive and don't let mistakes get to me. I correct and move on. I stay focused. I do my best to help my team and bring good energy. I like having fun, but I know at tournaments when to lock in and get serious. I’ve become better at communicating and more confident with my play. I’ve learned that my team plays better when I'm loud and call things early. I also feel like I’ve become more of a leader by talking up more of the court to help my teammates. My biggest challenge was learning all the techniques that so many girls have spent years learning, since my first year on a national team was my 16s.

Extracurricular Activities

Athletics -

Volleyball, Libero, 4 Years, Varsity Captain

I go to a city school, so we don’t always have the same resources as other teams. Because of that, I’ve taken on more responsibility with helping my teammates. A lot of the girls haven’t played club, so I teach them the basic skills I learned in club, like positioning, serve receive, how to read the other team, and how to communicate during plays. I also help our new coach with practices, volleyball IQ, rotations, and lineups. Her and I usually discuss lineups, and we usually agree on what it should be. This year we won the city championship for the first time in six years. Huge for all of us. It was high pressure, and I was able to serve the last points and some aces.

Soccer, Goalie, 2 Years (3 in spring)

I don’t play club soccer, but my school team didn’t have a goalie. I wanted to help, so I learned the position. It overlaps with club volleyball, but I like having a second sport. I like playing with my school friends. They’re really supportive and fun. I do spend a lot of time by myself in the goal box practicing patience and readiness.

Track, Relay, 1 Year

I used to run cross-country and was a top runner in the city. My mom wanted me to try track, since I couldnt run cross country. It overlaps with volleyball. I made varsity my freshman year after my first relay race. I didn’t really know the system. I was also in my first year of club volleyball. I eventually decided to not run and focus on volleyball. Volleyball has helped me build confidence and has made me less introverted.

Professional -

Link Crew Lead

I help freshmen transition into high school. I mentor a group of freshmen and now a group of sophomores. I’ve learned leadership, communication, and community-building through this.

Yearbook Club

I work on writing, editing, page design, and organizing our team. It’s helped me learn teamwork and how to manage longer projects.

Advisor Assistant

For my service hours, I help a school advisor.

School Announcer

I read the morning announcements and daily updates. I am a pretty good speaker. It improved my public speaking and helped me be more extroverted.

Culture -

Black Student Union, Asian Student Union, Latinos Unidos

I attend cultural clubs when they don’t overlap with athletics. I’ve traveled internationally and enjoy experiencing different places and cultures. The student groups are a fun way to connect with my friends.
